About 300,000 children and 199,000 families are living in poverty in Alberta. Red Deer has the highest percentage of Ione parent families in Alberta. 38% of families in Red Deer are low income. Poverty is more than a lack of money. It’s a lack of opportunity. When a child can’t attend recreation programs it impacts their learning, mental health and resiliency. Poverty costs all of us. Between $7.1 and $9.5 billion is spent every year in Alberta to manage the symptoms of poverty. Poverty deters economic development. People who don’t have sufficient income to meet their basic needs, can’t contribute to the local economy. Poverty affects us all. Let’s understand it. Let’s talk about it. Let’s take action together.
